Filler flowers perform an important role in all flower arrangements. Often, they can be the unsung heroes! So I have put together a little collection of my favourite filler flowers for cakes. I’ve included some of my free sugar flower tutorials with tools to make them, along with my latest online class!

Hydrangea

A quick and easy filler flower that every sugar artist should have in their repertoire. You can create a more complex and time-consuming version – but when creating hydrangea for wedding cakes, I think it’s best to keep things simple. You only need a few tools and each little bloom can be shaped in a matter of minutes.

Blossom

Blossom can stand alone as a statement arrangement or it can be the perfect filler for a Spring wedding cake. For example, a small branch of blossom could provide the perfect accompaniment to larger more showy flowers.

The New Filler Flowers Class!

In my latest online class, I have gathered 3 of my favourite filler flowers that are perfect for wedding cakes. Learn how to make Astilbe, “Cherry Caramel” Phlox and 2 versions of Scabiosa. Filler flowers need to be budget-friendly. So I have created a series of techniques to simplify some of these more intricate flowers. Astilbe is particularly intricate in its structure. However, I have devised a method to adjust the fullness and size of your stem to suit any budget.

Phlox is such a pretty addition to any cut flower arrangement and a real favourite of florists. It’s quick an easy to make from sugar as well which ticks all of the boxes when making gumpaste filler flowers! One of my favourite varieties is “Cherry Caramel” and so I chose this one for the online class. You could of course switch up the colour palette to create different varieties though if you wish.

Finally, my new online class includes 2 varieties of scabiosa. This is another intricate flower which has always made it tricky to use as a filler on wedding cakes when there are budgets to think about! However I have created 2 simplified versions which are quick to make whilst retaining a lifelike appearance.

Waxflower

A very understated flower but oh such a pretty filler! Usually found in shades of white or pink, this one is a little more fiddly to make if you are making a larger stem. However a few smaller stems can give a delicate touch to fill smaller gaps in cake posy arrangements. Find Part 1 of my free tutorial here and Part 2 here!

Spray roses

Probably one of my most used filler flowers on wedding cakes. Spray roses are quick to make. They can be switched up in size, shape and colour. And they fill a fairly sizeable gap so often only a few are required! One of my favourite varieties is the “Majolica” – a recent addition to my YouTube channel which you can find below. Or you can find my original Spray Rose tutorial from a few years ago here.

The perfect filler for early Summer arrangements, sweet peas are another flower that are quick and easy to make. I adore their pretty delicate frills and the array of different colours available. Find the full tutorial here!
